October 27, 2000"Medical Virology: From HIV and AIDS to Ebola and Marburg" Bio Sketch James O'Donnell D.O., receieved his B.A. from Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville and his D.O. from the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine. A fellowship in hematology and medical oncology and an internal medicine residency at Mount Sinai Hospital and Medical Center followed. Studies continued with another fellowship, this time in infectious diseases and AIDS research at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. Numerous awards and publications accompany him as he moved on to his current position with the Chicago Department of Health, Specialty Clinicians in STD and HIV Care. Minutes Oct. 27, 2000 Medical Virology HIV-Aids to Ebola & Marburg. Presented by James O'Donnell D.O. -After covering a simplified taxonomy of viridae (which have no paleontologicsal history): Double-stranded DNA e.g. Poxviridae, Herpesviridae; DNA & RNA reverse transcribing , e.g. Retroviridae Negative-sense. single-stranded RNA, e.g. Orthomyxoviridae (Influenzavirus), Filoviridae (Marburg, Ebola); Positive-sense, single-stranded RNA, e.g. Picornaviridae (Hepatovirus, Rhinovirus) and the major shapes are icosahedral and helical strands, pathogenesis and epidemiology were presented which are the real factors in scary viruses. Population density, water, and transportation allow growth and dispersal. Fast acting viruses , ebola and marburg are largely fatal , but they can be quarantined. Slow acting virus, HIV-Aids are more like the andromeda strain-they can spread, mutate and co-act with other pathogens without being geographically isolated. The influenza virus in 1918 killed 20 million peopl! The filo viruses may not yet have killed 500 people. Slides showed viral expression and bacteriological symptoms of STDs. Ebola Outbreaks - Updates: articles, documents, and statistics addressing the incidence of Ebola outbreaks around the world. Includes ebola resources and discussions. www.bocklabs.wisc.edu.
