"Mad Cows 2000"
Brian J. Ford
London, UK

Several years ago Brian Ford presented a two hour lecture entitled Mad Cows and English Men at Inter/Micro-96 here in Chicago. His lecture introduced us to new biological entities known as prions. Since that time, Stanley B. Prusiner received the 1997 Nobel Prize in Medicine and Physiology for his discovery of Prions-a new biological principle of infection. Brian will bring us up to date on this important topic in this lecture. In addition, plan to meet Brian again during Inter/Micro 2000, June 26-30, 2000, where he will present a paper entitled Hand-made Microscopes.

Brian J. Ford is one of Britain's best-known biologists. He is author of many papers on microscopy, including a number of best-selling books on the microscopes such as The Revealing Lens (1973), Optical Microscope Manual (1974), Microbe Power (1976), Single Lens (1985), The Leeuwenhoek Legacy (1991), and Genes, The Fight For Life (1998), which was based on a presentation by Brian at Inter Micro in Chicago. One hundred editions of his books have been published. His next US titles are The Future Of Food (July 2000) and Secret Language Of Nature (November 2000), which also began as an Inter Micro presentation.

He first spoke at Inter Micro in 1969, and has given an annual keynote lecture at Inter Micro, An Evening With Brian, since 1984. He has hosted his own TV programmes, appears in Hollywood documentary films, and lectures around the world.
